INTRINSIC: A NOVEL
by France Pinzon

This is my first ARC (Advance Reader Copy) book review! I was so pressured into reading this since it needs a book review, but I definitely enjoyed the journey!
This book gives me unsettling feelings, especially the mystery of Anne Reynes’ trauma, her fragmented memories, and especially the shadow figure following her. At the beginning, it even gave me Silent Hill vibes because of the eerie, psychological tension. The slow reveal of her past and what truly shaped her kept me questioning everything. In the middle of my reading, I really thought she's just traumatized and imagining things. But later on, I found out how the world kept things from her. I liked that the book didn’t give answers right away; instead, it slowly uncovered the truth behind her trauma and the political system controlling her world.
The pacing felt slow at times, but I realized that this was intentional, it allowed me to sit with Anne’s confusion, fear, and growth. I felt frustrated how the people around her, whom she acknowledged as her family, are those the first people who hid the truth from her. Also, the political aspect frustrated me in a very real way. It gave me that “ugh” feeling because it reflected how power can manipulate people and narratives, and how systems can shape identity. I love her new found friends in the editorial team, how they helped her especially the time when she needs a place to stay. It's so touching huhu
What resonated with me most was Anne choosing to confront the truth about herself instead of accepting what others defined her to be. Her journey felt like a reminder that identity isn’t something the world assigns to you, it’s something you claim. Reading this came at a personal time for me, as I’m navigating expectations from elders and outside voices. Intrinsic reminded me to trust my instincts and choose who I want to become.
Thank you, France Pinzon, for letting me part of your ARC readers!
